Couple of questions for the nickel hoarders here...
I have been saving all of my nickels for about a year now, but today is the first time I actually got rolls from the bank. (I am getting anxious to fill the jar I have been keeping them in, lol.)
Anyway, I got 10 rolls ($20 worth) of nickels from the bank this afternoon and as I was dumping them into the jar I saw a discolored looking nickel. I pulled it out and it was a 1943 nickel with the large 'P' over Monticello on the reverse, so I struck silver with my first batch of nickels. :) Was this beginner's luck, or is it still common to find war nickels in rolls? Do other nickel hoarders bother to look through their five centers for silver? |

Good find. Congrats! It's not common to find a war-nickle. I would bet a grandma/grandpa/kid/grandkid or a crack attic who stole it, unwittingly spent it.

They are fairly common to find simply because they look the same as other nickels. I searched a box of nickels once ($100) and found one in the batch. So that's not all that common, but common enough.
